How to Choose the Right Skirting Board
We’ve helped many clients with this decision, and now we want to share some helpful tips with you.
1. Design and Color
The first thing to consider is the design and color of the skirting board. This is a personal choice, but it’s important to imagine how the skirting board will look in the space where it will be installed. Consider the style of your interior, and choose a molding profile that complements it. It’s also a good idea to match the color of the skirting board to your door linings and window frames.
2. Dimensions – Height and Thickness
The height of the skirting board should relate to the height of your ceiling. In rooms with high ceilings, a low skirting board will look out of place. For a 280 cm ceiling, we recommend a skirting board height of at least 12 cm. For ceilings around 240 cm, a height of 7-12 cm is ideal. You want the skirting board to be visible, so avoid choosing one that’s too small.
Thickness
Measure the gap between the wall and the floor boards. We can make skirting boards as thin as 10 mm, but if the gap is larger, we can create thicker ones, up to 20 mm, to cover the space. Also, consider the thickness of your door frames (usually 18-20 mm) and match the skirting board thickness accordingly.
3. Adding a Termination (Shoe Molding)
If the gap between the wall and floor exceeds 22 mm, you’ll need to add a second piece called a termination (shoe molding). This is a simple molding, typically 12x12 mm to 18x18 mm, that covers any gaps the skirting board can’t.
With these tips in mind, you’re ready to choose your perfect skirting board!
